A peaceful journey along protected rivers, waterfalls and a quiet fjord arm. Here, the whole family can fish for trout and walk along well-maintained paths past waterfalls and rapids. There are also boat rentals and trails for mountain hikes. The road runs along an arm of the world’s longest fjord, Sognefjorden, before winding up along the steep sides of the valley toward the mountain. The road continues along the protected Gaularvassdraget river, known for its many waterfalls, rapids and peaceful mountain lakes. There are paths to the waterfalls along parts of the river, to make the more scenic areas more accessible. From the idyllic village of Balestrand, there are opportunities for side trips. A good way to experience the scenery is by boat to Fjærland and the glacier museum there. The Gaularfjellet National Tourist Route between Balestrand and Eldalosen, and Moskog and Eldalsosen and Sande is 114 kilometres long (County Roads 55/13/610). The route between Mel and Mjell on Gaularfjellet is closed in winter.
